YCW movement bounces back (24 July 2005)
THE Young Christian Workers (YCW) movement is re-establishing itself as a vital cog in the youth ministry scene in Brisbane archdiocese. For 60 years the YCW movement played a major role in the Catholic Church's youth ministry in Brisbane, helping young adults live out their faith in their daily lives.  New groups have started in Lutwyche parish, Redlands Bayside Deanery and Mt Olivet Hospital at Kangaroo Point, and more are in the pipeline. Priest plays celebrity chef (5 December 2004)
MARIST Father Tony Kennedy revealed one of his hidden talents when he turned celebrity chef on November 29. The parish priest of St Johns Wood-The Gap, in Brisbane’s west, gave a cooking demonstration of one of his favourite recipes - ginger chicken chilli stir fry - and some of his parishioners had the chance to do a taste test. The cooking demonstration coincided with the launch of a parish cookbook. [More]

Baptism row raises more questions (5 December 2004)
ARCHBISHOP John Bathersby of Brisbane has questioned whether a parish that changes the structure of the sacraments can remain part of the archdiocesan or universal Church. His comments follow a controversy over invalid baptisms at St Mary’s Parish, South Brisbane. [More]

Homeless problem a ‘scandal’ (14 November 2004)
THE lack of emergency accommodation for homeless youths in Brisbane is a ‘scandal’, a youth advocacy priest said. Karyn Walsh, who co-ordinates Micah Projects, based at St Mary’s Community, South Brisbane, said youth homelessness was only part of a wider housing crisis in Brisbane. Ms Walsh said a Brisbane homelessness action plan was needed to address the number of people coming to Queensland and the redevelopment happening in the area. [More]

Ugandan cardinal’s message of hope (17 October 2004)
CARDINAL Emmanuel Wamala of Uganda, a man who shares the sufferings of his people, visited Brisbane archdiocese earlier this month to tell their story. Cardinal Wamala was in Brisbane from October 4-11 as a guest of Catholic Mission, visiting schools and parishes. One of the highlights was a Mass of thanksgiving and remembrance at Holy Cross Church, Wooloowin, on Brisbane’s northside. [More]

Friends visit from E Timor (25 July 2004)
FOUR young East Timorese are spending three weeks in Brisbane strengthening the bonds of friendship with parishioners in Bardon and St Johns Wood/The Gap. They are being hosted by Friends and Partners with East Timor (FPET), a group which originated in the two parishes, but now encompasses other parishes, including Enoggera. [More

Mater Dreams come True (25 July 2004)
MATER Health Services at South Brisbane has officially opened its first on-site child care facility in Queensland. It is also believed to be a first for the Mater in Australia.

Koinonia evening of prayer (23 May 2004)
THE Brisbane Vocation Centre will host the next monthly Koinonia prayer evening at St Patrick’s Church, Fortitude Valley on June 2. Koinonia gives Catholic young adults aged 16 and up an opportunity to gather each month for reflection on Scripture and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. It is an initiative of the vocation centre in conjunction with Emmanuel Youth Outreach, and prayers focus around Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with members of Emmanuel Youth Outreach providing music. Gift of Hope for Detainees (23 May 2004)
TEDDY Bears, flowers and flags will be aboard a Flotilla of Hope bound for Nauru as a sign of support from Brisbane schools and parishes for asylum seekers in detention. The Ecumenical Social Justice Group of the Western Suburbs (ESJGWS) of Brisbane has rallied support for the flotilla, which will be farewelled from Brisbane on May 23. [More]

Celebration of the Three Saints (9 May 2004)
SEVERAL hundred people, mainly from the Italian community, took to the streets of the inner Brisbane suburb of Wooloowin on May 2 to show their devotion to the Feast of the Three Saints. They followed statues of the three saints - brother martyrs, St Alfio, St Fidalfo and St Cirino - on a parade through the streets around Holy Cross Church. [More]

Creative Easter (21 March 2004)
MARIST Young Adult Ministry Brisbane (MYAMB) is inviting young adults and Year 12 students to spend 'Easter in Brisbane', a creative and thought-provoking way of experiencing and celebrating the Resurrection. The two-day creative encounter will take place at Marist College, Ashgrove's Cyprian Pavilion on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. [More]

Sisters' place of living water (22 February 2004)
'THE Chalice of Living Water' is the title of a new sculpture outside the chapel of the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. Auxiliary Bishop Brian Finnigan of Brisbane blessed the feature on February 1.[More]

Celebration of Marriage (15 February 2004)
HAPPILY married couples of all ages gathered at St Brigid's Church in the inner Brisbane suburb of Red Hill on February 8 to join worldwide celebrations of the importance of marriage in society. It has become an annual event for people from around Brisbane to gather at St Brigid's for a World Marriage Day Mass. [More]

Termite threat to church (9 March 2003)
A LANDMARK Brisbane church is in danger of being eaten away by termites. The pests have taken over Our Lady of Victories Church at Bowen Hills and are posing a threat to the structure of the building. About $10,000 is needed for pest control work to prevent the church from being eaten away. The Our Lady of Victories community is appealing for donations to help stop the termites before they do irreparable damage. [More]

Celebrations in Polish community (1 December 2002)
THE Polish community in Brisbane gathered to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Society of Christ missionary order last Sunday. Brisbane Auxiliary Bishop John Gerry was a special guest at the celebrations which centred around a Mass in the prominent white, hilltop Our Lady of Victories Church at Bowen Hills, which has one of the city’s best vistas of the Brisbane River and suburbs.
